how to make money online with a small following

If you have a small following right now and you keep thinking…

“I need to grow more before I can actually make money…”

I want to challenge that.

Because one of the biggest misconceptions in business right now is that you need a large audience before you can start earning.

And while that can be true in some cases…

It’s not the only way.

And it’s definitely not the fastest or most reliable way when you’re just starting out — especially if you’re building your business alongside real life.

In this post, I’m going to show you how to start making money with the audience you already have — even if it’s small.

Quick Takeaways (save this)

If you want the short version, it’s this:

  • You don’t need more followers to make money — you need clarity, a simple offer, and connection.
  • “More followers = more money” is only true for business models that rely on ads, virality, or brand deals.
  • The beginner-friendly model is: sell something you own (a service, session, simple package, or digital offer).
  • Small audiences struggle to monetise when there’s no clear offer, no clear problem being solved, or no clear next step.
  • Content can build trust — but money usually comes from conversations and conversions, not content alone.

Why people think they need a big audience

To be fair… this belief doesn’t come from nowhere.

Because when you look online — especially at content creators and influencers — it really does look like the big money comes from having a big audience.

For example:

  • On YouTube, once you’re in the partner program, your videos can be monetised — so you can earn from ads.
  • You can get brand partnerships and collaborations — and usually, the bigger your audience, the more you can charge.

So naturally, it creates this idea that:

More followers = more money.

And that’s the model a lot of people are aiming for.

The problem with that model (especially for beginners)

Here’s the part that often gets missed:

That model is not the only way to make money online.
And it’s also not the most beginner-friendly way.

Because it depends on:

  • scale
  • algorithms
  • visibility
  • and sometimes… timing and luck

It also usually takes time.

You don’t go from 0 to brand deals overnight.
You don’t immediately earn meaningful income from ads when you’re just starting.

So if you’re sitting there waiting to “grow” before you earn…

You can end up stuck in that phase for a long time.

And it’s exhausting — because it makes you feel like your business is on pause until you hit some magical number.

The shift: “How can I make money with the audience I already have?”

Instead of thinking:

“I need a big audience to make money…”

I want you to start thinking:

“How can I make money with the audience I already have?”

Because there’s another model.

And this one is much more in your control.

Instead of relying on platforms or brands…

You create something of your own to sell.

That could be:

  • a service
  • a session
  • a simple package
  • a digital product
  • a workshop
  • a small offer that helps someone solve a specific problem

And when you sell something you own, you don’t need thousands of followers.

You need the right people — and a clear message.

What actually makes money at the beginning

At the beginning of a business, money doesn’t come from having the most followers.

It comes from having:

✅ a clear person
✅ a clear problem
✅ a clear solution
✅ and being able to communicate that clearly

Because if 50 people follow you…
and 10 of them really understand what you do and feel like it’s for them…

You can make money.

But if 5,000 people follow you and no one understands what you offer…

You’ll struggle.

So it’s not just about visibility.

It’s about clarity and connection.

Why small audiences struggle to make money (it’s usually not the size)

When people have a small audience and they’re not making money, it’s usually not because the audience is too small.

It’s usually because:

  • there’s no clear offer
  • there’s no clear problem being solved
  • there’s no clear next step for the audience
  • or they’re focused on growing instead of selling

So they’re posting content…

…but there’s no bridge between the content and an actual offer.

And that’s when you start feeling like:

“I’m showing up… but nothing is happening.”

What’s really happening is: your audience isn’t being guided.

What to focus on instead (so you can monetise now)

So instead of focusing all your energy on:

“How do I grow faster?”

I want you to focus on:

“How do I make this clearer?”

Start here:

1) Who am I helping?

Be specific.
Not “everyone who wants to start a business.”

More like:

  • corporate women who want to start consulting on the side
  • beginner product business owners who want consistent sales
  • women who want to make income online without being online all day

2) What problem am I solving?

What are they stuck on right now?

Examples:

  • “I don’t know what to sell.”
  • “I want to earn but my audience is small.”
  • “I don’t know how to talk about my offer without being salesy.”

3) What result can I help them get?

What changes after working with you?

Examples:

  • “You’ll have a simple first offer you can sell this month.”
  • “You’ll know exactly what to post to attract buyers (not just likes).”
  • “You’ll have a marketing system that fits your life.”

4) Create a simple offer around that

It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to work.

Here are a few beginner-friendly offer types:

  • 1:1 session (audit, clarity call, strategy session)
  • simple package (2–4 weeks of support with a clear outcome)
  • done-with-you offer (you guide them through implementation)
  • small digital product (template, guide, checklist, mini workshop)

If you want a helpful prompt:
What is one problem I could help someone solve in 7–14 days?
That’s often where your easiest first offer lives.

The part people skip: you need conversations

This is where money actually starts to appear — even with a small audience.

Because money doesn’t come from content alone.

It comes from connection.

So yes, keep posting.
But also:

  • reply to DMs
  • respond to comments like a real conversation
  • ask questions in stories
  • invite people to tell you what they’re struggling with
  • follow up when someone engages consistently

If you’re shy, here are a few simple conversation starters you can use:

  • “Out of curiosity, what made you follow?”
  • “What are you working on right now?”
  • “What’s been the hardest part so far?”
  • “If you could solve one thing this month, what would it be?”

You’re not “bothering” people. You’re doing market research — and building trust.

The sustainability piece (this matters more than people realise)

One more thing, because I think it’s overlooked:

If you’re choosing what to talk about or build around purely based on what you think will make money…

…it’s going to be very hard to sustain long-term.

Because building a business requires consistency.
And consistency is hard when you don’t actually care about what you’re doing.

So ideally, you want to choose something where:

  • you either understand it really well
    or
  • you’re genuinely curious about it and willing to learn and share as you go

That’s what allows you to keep showing up.

And long-term, that’s what creates stable income.

Recap: how to make money with a small following

If you take anything from this post, let it be this:

You don’t need a big audience to make money.

You need:

  • clarity (who you help + what you solve)
  • a simple offer (something people can actually buy)
  • connection (conversations that lead to conversion)

So focus less on:

“How many people are following me?”

…and more on:

“How can I help the people who are already here?”

FAQs

Can you really make money with under 1,000 followers?

Yes. If you have a clear offer that solves a clear problem, you only need a small number of people who truly understand what you do.

What should I sell if my audience is small?

Start with a simple offer: a 1:1 session, a short package, or a small digital product that solves one specific problem.

Do I need to go viral to make money online?

No. Virality can help visibility, but it’s not required. Clarity, offers, and connection are more reliable.

What if people like my content but nobody buys?

That usually means there’s no clear offer, no clear next step, or your content isn’t connecting to the problem your offer solves.

Your turn
